Schoolfund

In Ghana, parents have by law an obligation to pay tuition for their children. This includes naturally the Rckanje school in Old Tafo -Kumasi. The school has at the moment 720 students and 26 teachers. Fifteen of them are certified teachers and are paid by the government. The rest of the empoyees, kindergareten teachers, computer teachers, librarian, kitchen help and the watchman are paid salaries from the collected school fees. Besides, the children recieve every day at 12 noon a hot lunch. For many children this is their only meal of the day.
Of course there are many other expenses the school incurs, i.e. electricity, water, telephone, maintenance, educational materials, etc. It is understandable that the school critically needs the tuition to survive. Old Tafo is one of the poorest neighborhoods of the town of Kumasi. Some parents or guardians can barely afford this school fee (equal to 5,00 Euro per month) or perhaps not at all. At times the whole family saves to keep a child in school.
Then there are also deserted children who have become literally streetkids. For them , the school is a save haven. Because of government regulations, those children , because of lack of money, are the first ones to be back out on the streets again. Our work committee is trying to prevent this at all cost. We built this school for all chidren of Old Tafo and particularly for those who need it most. For this reason we established in 1999 a school fund. For the contribution of Euro 5 a month, or Euro 55 a year, you can help a child stay in school. From this donation, the tuition, the hot lunch and education material is paid. In critical cases we also finance medical care.
The school fund is managed by the work committee in Rockanje, The Netherlands in cooperation with the school committee and the P.T.A. of the Rockanje School in Old Tafo-Kumasi. The money is used 100% for the benefit of the child as our administrative costs are minimal and done by volunteers. We appeal to you. Please help support the school fund to give the poorest children of Old Tafo a better future! Should't every child have a right to go to school?
